Travel Itinerary 2016 🞹 Laos, Cambodia and a lot of Vietnam

Updated: Sep 5, 2019

The year 2016 is all about travelling.

I was on the road in South-east Asia for almost four months, and I enjoyed every single minute to the full. Good Session!

Started in Thailand, with a short stay in Bangkok and Chiang Mai.

Laos from north to south. Hilly landscapes, endless roads flickering and burning in the heat, beautiful temples and historically significant buildings, small sleepy villages and hamlets, graceful and warm and charming Laotians, an incredibly delightful capital (Vientiane), without skyscrapers, shopping malls or other showy irrelevances. Travel as far away as possible from the beaten track and made a big bend around the minivan backpackers and the mainstream tourist transports...

It was a vibrant time with my travel companion (Giovanni from Sardinia), encountered on the back seat of a local coach on the route from Savannaketh to Pakse. Unforgettable time on Don Khon Island (4000 Islands), the southern-most point of Laos.

Cambodia short visit with an obligatory stopover at Siem Reap, respectively Angkor Wat. Historical bicycle tours in the sprawling Angkor Wat area, a four day excursion back to the heyday of the Khmer. A very short stay in Phnom Pen. I regret it, as there is definitely a lot more of catching up to do.

Travelled on the Mekong and the Toné Sap river towards the rivers mouth. Overwhelming experiences in south Vietnam and Mekong Delta, which I discovered on my own, always away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist routes. Simple world in harmony - at least for a short time.

Wonderful experiences on the South Vietnamese island Phu Quoc....

Saigon once again, a very intense visit. Excursions on new paths in D3, D7, D4, away from the well known District 1.

North Vietnam and Hanoi: a hair-raising adventure, impressive and definitely a long-lasting experience. Short stays in Mui Ne and Nha Trang without expectations. Relaxed and unspectacular.

Da Nang: Wonderfully impressive and refreshing. Lots of sun on my face and a fresh breeze blowing behind energise me exploring the booming city (1.15 million 2016), the coast of south-central Vietnam and the far-flung and very rural surrounding countryside.

Back in Switzerland on April 29, 2016, with a huge bouquet of colourful impressions, positive and long-lasting experiences. Reminiscences, friendships and a little melancholy remains...

Next stop Asia. Four Months South-east Asia
